The most common surgical procedure performed to treat movement disorders is deep brain stimulation (DBS), however a range of other treatment options are also considered when we tailoring an approach to each patient’s therapeutic needs. Precision is the Victoria’s leading private movement disorder treatment unit and offers MR-Guided Focused Ultrasound (MRgFUS) to suitable patients. MRgFUS is an incisionless surgical technique which is proving highly effective in many patients.
Parkinson’s disease is the most commonly treated condition, with subthalamic nucleus (STN) deep brain stimulation (DBS) being the most frequent operation performed. DBS may also be used to treat generalised dystonia and spasmodic torticollis (“wry neck”). Other movement disorders such as essential tremor and multiple sclerosis tremor are also frequently responsive to surgery.
