The treatment of Parkinson’s disease has been revolutionised by the advent of deep brain stimulation. The field is evolving rapidly and this seminar aims to bring you up to date with the current indications for surgery, expected outcomes, and tips for the management of these patients after surgery. Spinal problems are also common in Parkinson’s disease, and their diagnosis and management will be also be reviewed.

Parkinson’s Disease: Diagnosis and Treatment Update

The clinical presentation of Parkinson’s Disease is reviewed, together with the important differentiating features from other conditions. The natural history and current medical management options will be discussed.

Peripheral Entrapment Neuropathies: Clinical Presentation and Assessment, and the Role of Nerve Conduction Studies

Peripheral entrapment neuropathies such as carpal tunnel syndrome and unary neuropathy are common and easily diagnosed, but less frequent entrapment syndromes can be more difficult to diagnose. A range of common and uncommon entrapment neuropathies will be discussed. Nerve conduction studies and electromyography (EMG) are a widely used neurophysiological investigations for the diagnosis of a range of conditions, including peripheral entrapment neuropathy. The physiological principles, indications and interpretation of these tests will be explained, including their value and limitations.
