Neurosurgical Causes of Headaches: Tumours, Chiari Malformation, Haemorrhage and More

Professor Richard Bittar, Neurosurgeon & Spinal Surgeon

The vast majority of headaches are benign, self-limiting and do not require neurosurgical assessment. There are, however, a small number of neurosurgical causes of headaches, and their early recognition and treatment can often make the difference between life and death. This talk covers some serious causes of headaches which may require surgical intervention.

Learning outcomes

1. Identify the range of clinical presentations of brain tumours, Chiari malformations, subarachnoid haemorrhage, and cervicogenic headaches
2. Recognise the key aspects of early management, including the use of imaging modalities
3. Assess the role of surgery, and recent advances which may impact on outcome

Headache Diagnosis and Treatment. Botox- More Than Just a Pretty Face!

Dr Ann French, Neurologist

Migraines are a common cause of intractable headaches, with a wide and often serious differential diagnosis. This seminar aims to review the diagnostic considerations, investigations, and treatment of migraines. Botox is now PBS listed for migraines, and its indications, outcomes and side effects will be reviewed.

Learning outcomes

1. Recognise the presentation and diagnosis of migraine and migraine variants
2. Identify the pharmacological treatment options and their pitfalls
3. Assess the indications, outcomes and potential side effects of Botox for migraines

Headaches- Blocks, Stimulators and an Integrated Treatment Approach

Dr Richard Sullivan, Pain Specialist & Anaesthetist

The investigation and diagnosis of headaches is frequently arduous and complex. This talk covers the important types of common and uncommon headaches, and outlines the range of cutting-edge treatment options available, including blocks, radiofrequency denervations and neuromodulation. A multidisciplinary approach and its rationale is emphasised.

Learning outcomes

1. Assess the presentation and diagnosis of common and uncommon causes of headaches
2. Recognise the indications and role of diagnostic blocks and radiofrequency denervations in the diagnosis and treatment of headaches
3. Identify the role of Botox, occipital nerve and spinal cord stimulation in managing the refractory patient
